St. Francis Sonoma County is styled to emphasize rich varietal character and body in a classic Sonoma style. The fragrant Cabernet aromas of cassis and black fruit are underscored by discreet notes of vanilla, cedar and tobacco, and carry into ripe, intense berry fruit flavors on the palate. The structure is firm and well balanced, with excellent depth and supple, generous tannins. These impressions are confirmed on the finish, which is long and marked by a complex notes of spice and oak.
Ripe, rich, chewy blackberry and black currant flavors lead onto this wine's lush, velvety palate followed by impressions of cedar, tobacco, spice and vanilla with supple, round tannins on the finish.

For more than four decades, the wines of St. Francis Winery & Vineyards have reflected the finest mountain and valley vineyards in Sonoma County. Our founder, Joe Martin, fell in love with Sonoma Valley and established St. Francis Vineyard in 1971, planting 22 acres of Chardonnay and the first 60 acres of Merlot in Sonoma Valley. Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the Joneses, or Napa-ites if you will. Grape varieties are more varied here, from Pinot Noir and Zinfandel to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Notable FactsThe largest sub-AVAs of Sonoma include Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. Each sub-AVA, with its own micro-climate, is unique in its grape varieties and styles of wine. Dry Creek makes a mean Zinfandel while Russian River produces stand up Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Alexander Valley makes some of the better Cabernet Sauvignons in the county and Sonoma Valley creates excellent wines from all the above varieties. Other grapes found throughout Sonoma include Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah.

Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

First, I bought this wine at a grocery store. Opened a bottle and drank some, re-corked it and let it stand until the next day. After re-opening and drinking it the next day, the wine had transformed into one of the best Cabs I have ever tasted! It was hard to believe. Nice full bodied Cabernet, great value for the price. I have paid a lot more for Cabernet's which were not as layered as this wine.
