Frederick Victor Corkrum played football for Whittman College in Walla Walla. His father, Uriah, was dead set against it. School was alright, he thought, but football was downright frivolous, kept a man from his family and work. In fact, Uriah got so angry about Fred's refusal to quit the sport that he wouldn't speak to him for an entire year. Nonetheless, Fred graduated from Whitman in 1921 then returned to the ranch in Spring Valley and his father's good graces.
