Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This wine has all the elements of a classic chardonnay. The fruit aromas of freshsliced apple and Asian pear are complimented with citrus notes of lime zest, grapefruitand Meyer lemon and a floral touch of honeysuckle and orange blossom. In themouth, it is lush, round and creamy with support from a firm acid structure thatcreates excellent balance. Fruit flavors of lemon curd, lime, Asian pear and bakedapple fold into shortbread, candied pecans and marmalade that is touched withtoasty oak before the long finish of sweet key lime.

On the tart side, trim and compact, displaying lemony citrus and minerally green flavors that give this a mouthwatering quality. Best from 2011 through 2014.

For more than 37 years, Sonoma-Cutrer has earned a reputation of craftsmanship by steadfastly choosing quality over quantity. The winery is known for crafting world-class expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by marrying traditional Burgundian winemaking methods with their own California innovation. Few wine producers in the world have such a singular focus and commitment to growing, crafting, and marketing their wines. This is evident as Sonoma-Cutrer has been named the #1 Most Requested Chardonnay 24 out of 29 years by the Wine & Spirits Magazine.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
