Snowden Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley, California
The grapes became our Sauvignon Blanc 2008 come from the Beckstoffer Vineyard in Rutherford. They were hand-picked at 23.5 degrees Brix and were still cool when they arrived at our winemaking facility in St Helena. We pressed the clusters whole and fermented the juice in a combination of used white wine barrels and stainless steel barrels. The natural fermentation began within days and continued slowly over a month and a half until dry. We then blocked the malo-lactic fermentation to preserve the wine's natural acidity and aromas. We kept the wine on its lees until it was bottled, unfiltered, June 4, 2008.
International Wine Cellar - "Pale, bright yellow. Pungent aromas of musky lemon peel, cress and white flowers. Juicy and brisk, with a steely quality to the flavors of white grapefruit, green apple and minerals. Shows a slight spiciness but there's very little new oak here. For all its juicy cut, this offers good texture and does not come off as hard."

For three generations our family has been farming red wine grapes on our ranch located on the eastern slope of the Napa Valley overlooking the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena. Our property is in the heartland of vineyards of distinction and character; it touches both the Rutherford and St. Helena appellations, and the Howell Mountain appellation is a few hundred yards away. It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux Blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Notable FactsWithin the Napa Valley lie smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two is St.-Helena and finally, just grated an AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Mount Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.

The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.
