Winemaker Notes

This limited edition, coffee-table book about Sine Qua Non and the magnum of 2012 Petite Sirah packaged with it is the latest maverick project from Manfred and Elaine Krankl, iconic founders of Sine Qua Non. SQN is of course the cult producer of some of the contemporary wine world's most collectible wines, which are admired and acquired not only because they are extraordinarily delicious to drink but because they come with irreverent names and off-beat labels. In April the Krankls released this collector's edition book and the Petite Sirah to their mailing list only. The book, called "The Art of Sine Qua Non," includes a history of SQN written by Manfred and a foreword by Elaine. It also contains images of many of the SQN labels, including every single rosé label, and images of labels that, according to the Krankls, were "rejected by the pleasure police," presumably governmental authorities. These non-conformist labels promise to be highly amusing. The book is a 250-page, cloth-bound, hardcover, 13-inch by 9.5-inch edition. The collector's edition on offer here is numbered and is one of only 350 produced. It is signed by Manfred and comes packaged in a bamboo box with the Petite Sirah, which is appropriately called "The Writing on the Wall." The wine is 94% Petite Sirah and 6% Viognier from estate vineyards. Only 356 magnums were produced.94% Petite Sirah and 6% Viognier. Only 356 1.5L bottles produced.
Original Wooden Case (OWC) may ship in a separate box from the wine.

The 2012 Petite Sirah The Writing on the Wall should be the greatest Petite Sirah to ever come out of California (or the world?). Made from 94% Petite Sirah and 6% Viognier and aged in 80% old hogsheads and 20% in new French oak, it’s bottled only in magnum and will be sold along with the new Sine Qua Non label art book. A massive, full-bodied effort that offers incredible depth and richness without ever seeming heavy or cumbersome, it offers up blockbuster-styled aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, crushed rocks, beef blood and licorice. It should age for decades. Range: 97-100

Sine Qua Non, California
Sine Qua Non Winery Image
Sine Qua Non was created after the 1994 harvest of a Bien Nacido Syrah named “The Queen of Spades”. Winemaker Manfred Krankl feels strongly that each vintage is a completely unique wine and thus he gives each wine a unique name. He also creates the artwork for each new label himself. Previously, Manfred had made wines with Bryan Babcock and John Alban and still sources much of his fruit from Alban’s vineyard. The basic white wines have always been a white blend of Chardonnay, Roussanne and Viognier and a red wine based on Syrah plus Grenache. Sometimes there are small quantities of Rose and a Grenache-based red.

Sine Qua Non has its own winemaking facility in Ventura, California not far from the Santa Barbara vineyards where the fruit is sourced from. In the last few years Manfred and his wife, Elaine, have begun creating their own vineyards dedicated to Rhone varietals. Their winemaking philosophy is to work in very small batches, gravity flow, natural yeasts (unless a fermentation problem is anticipated), long lees aging for the whites and repeated racking for the reds to open them up. This is a modified explanation of a very dedicated and artistic approach to winemaking. The wines are simultaneously very rich and elegant, superbly balanced and thoroughly harmonious with food, never overwhelming.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
