Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2002 Hollerin' M Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir is absolutely mind-blowing Pinot, one of the most compelling examples I have ever tasted from Oregon. Deep plum/ruby/purple to the rim, with a glorious perfume of forest floor intermixed with acacia flowers, sweet cherries and plums, as well as hints of pomegranate and blackberries, it cuts a broad swath across the palate. The texture inundates the palate, and it finishes with tremendous voluptuousness and purity. A great hedonistic treat for all the senses, it will provide immense pleasure over the next decade. "
96 Points

"Full red. Flamboyant aromas of tangy raspberry and exotic oak spices. Densely packed, suave and sweet, with red berry, underbrush and exotic spicy oak notes accented by a floral tea quality. The bright, energetic raspberry and strawberry fruit carries to a sappy, juicy finish that emphasizes the oak spice. Perhaps more Sine Qua Non than pinot noir-or Oregon, for that matter-but undeniably delicious and seductive."

Learn About Sine Qua Non

Sine Qua Non was created after the 1994 harvest of a Bien Nacido Syrah named The Queen of Spades. Winemaker Manfred Krankl feels strongly that each vintage is a completely unique wine and thus he gives each wine a unique name. He also creates the artwork for each new label himself. Previously, Manfred had made wines with Bryan Babcock and John Alban and still sources much of his...

Learn About Other Oregon

Like many other states, Oregon itself is an AVA of note. An Oregon wine can simply state Oregon as its place of origin, which typically means the grapes came from multiple smaller AVAs within the state. Beyond the main AVAs of Oregon, like Willamette Valley, Rogue and Umpqua, smaller regions are gaining ground. Some you may see on the label include: Columbia or Walla...

Pinot Noir hails from Burgundy, a region known for crafting the most collectible and sought-after wines from this varietal. Not only does Pinot reign in Burgundy, it is also...
