Winemaker Notes

This wine was 100% barrel fermented and matured in new American for 12 months. This is McLarenVale Shiraz at its best. The concentration of fruit with its silky texture is amazing. The nose is powerful with lifted aromas of intense pepper, blackcurrant and spice. The palate has a firm structure with chocolate, licorice and spice fruit characters. The wine has an incredible depth of fruit, which is layered and complex and will linger in your mouth for minutes.

The nearly perfect 2002 Shiraz is the stuff of legends. It is a 1,000 case cuvee that has been completely fermented and aged in 100% new American oak. An inky purple color is accompanied by a remarkable bouquet of white flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberries, currants, figs, and espresso roast. Extremely full-bodied, with extraordinary ripeness, opulence, and viscosity, yet very good acidity as well as excellent tannin providing up-lift and definition, this unforgettable wine can be drunk now or cellared for a decade or more. Bravo!

Shirvington started in 1996 when the family purchased 16 hectares of prime land in Willunga (now known as White’s Valley), South Australia. Willunga is just south of McLaren Vale on the Fleurieu Peninsula, an area internationally renowned for its red wines.

In the winter of 1996 work began on the development of the first vineyard, Redwind, where we planted Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (since replaced with Mataro) vines. Their aim was to grow grapes to produce super-premium, honest wines with full fruit flavour, and to build a strong and thriving Australian brand, respected as a leader in quality, consistency and value to the consumer.

They have since established vineyards in other parts of McLaren Vale, with additional Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache vines. Only the best Redwind Vineyard grapes are pressed for the wines, the excess fruit is sold to other quality winemakers.

Sustainable farming practices are used in their vineyards. Each vintage is closely monitored right through to the hand selection of the fruit before harvest. The quality of fruit is such that their first commercial release, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, was awarded Wine of the Year (The Bushing Trophy) at the prestigious McLaren Vale Wine Show. Subsequent vintages of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz have gone on to further accolades nationally and internationally.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
