Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Last but never least, we offer Homer, our blend of "best" barrels. This year's Homer displays the overall characteristics of the 2011 vintage - wonderful aromatics, a succulent mouth feel, long finish, beautiful silky tannins – but it does so with Homer panache. The fruit leans towards the plum, blackberry, currant spectrum and the wine is focused and highly concentrated.

Critical Acclaim

"The 410 cases of Shea Cellars 2011 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard Homer reflect barrels from three blocks, none of which were subjected to solo bottlings, and is at 13.7% alcohol the highest of its collection. Rutabaga and radish earthily and bitingly scent and flavor the juicy fresh cherry, red currant and red raspberry on display here. A lovely sense of tannic refinement; of transparency to stony and forest floor nuances; and of energy makes this long-lingering Pinot another impressive exemplar of its vintage likely to reward return visits through at least 2022. "

"Homer is the estate reserve, and it’s a complete, elegant and stylish wine, that is still in its infancy. Pretty baking spices wrap around tart cherry flavors. There’s superb balance among components of fruit, herb, acid and tannin, and it’s got excellent length, proportion and detail.
