Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.8%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Spicy, lush black fruit flavors of Alexander Valley. Briary and raspberry flavors are present, along with structure of of cooler Dry Creek Valley. Overall, this is a balanced and elegantly structured Zinfandel.

Critical Acclaim

"An excellent wine from a challenging vintage, with aromas of black cherry and spice opening to rich wild berry, mineral and toasty sage flavors that wrap around a concentrated core of acidity and tannins. Best from 2015 through 2021."
92 Points

"By every report and what we have seen in early tastings, 2011 is an uneven vintage, especially as far as red wines are concerned. This extremely well-made working proves that, as always, very good wines await those willing to search, and it hits the varietal mark smartly. It is precise in its focus on ripe berries and briary spice, and it is particularly well-balanced with fine energy and a long, very firm finish. It is still on the tight side and we would argue against hasty drinking, but it is an easy-odds bet to grow and improve for another three to five years."

I love when I prefer the more affordable vintage, as that is rarely the case. This wine is perfect I am sure, for those enjoying a steak or venison dinner, but I think of it as the wine equivalent of Guinness' "all you need and all you want". This wine is a meal in of itself. Decadent as homemade Mexican chocolate, with exciting notes of clove and star anise. You must let this wine breathe. If not, the high alcohol content will singe your palate aggressively and you will not be able to taste all of those dense, dark flavors. Even though this wine is elegant and rich, I like it best in large quantities. Makes a wonderful gift too.

Nearly as good as the 2007 effort which I had a few months ago...powerful cherry and spice followed by brambly sage, topped off by rich tannins and acidity for balance. This is very good right now but will be better in another few years. It's wise to decant for an hour to let the potent flavors and aromas to meld. Seghesio always ranges from strong to spectacular. This vintage falls in the latter category and should make WS Top 100.

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Zinfandel

Zinfandel(ZIN-fahn-dell) American Grape Zinfandel the American - or Californian - grape. Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California. During Prohibition, many Zinfandel vines survived as the high-yielding grape was popular both for home winemaking and communion wine, which is...
