Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep red color with tones of violet. The aromas are complex with notes of prunes, figs, spices and green peppers. On the palate, concentrated dense and mature tannins.

Pair with pastas, medium flavored cheeses or barbecued meats.

Critical Acclaim

"Dry, spicy and floral smelling, with modest herbal accents. The palate is saturated and fairly rich, with good texture and broad, satisfying flavors of berry and plum. Sturdy, consistent and fresh, with easy drinkability.

Style: Smooth & Supple
At this price ($8.25/bottle), we didn't have very high expectations, but after opening the first bottle my wife said What is this wine; I really like it? Unusual for her, but it was enough motivation to order another case before the sale ended. Very smooth and tasty. Ready to drink now, but plan to save a few bottles for the future after it ages a little more.

Learn About Merlot

Merlot(mehr-LOW) No second fiddle Merlot is coming back into its own. High popularity led to mass production, which then led to a backlash towards the variety (remember Miles in Sideways?). But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
