Winemaker Notes

A bright purple wine of great intensity and depth, with aromas of marked personality, in which the Malbec character is perfectly recognizable, with reminiscences of fresh and ripe plums, a touch of cherry and a touch of mint as seasoning; accompanied by slight spicy nuances and tobacco as a result of ageing in oak barrels. Its mouth-feel is very sweet and round. This complex Malbec offers flavors reminiscent of ripe red berries, with a fine concentration and the sweet tannins typical of the variety. The wine continues to reveal its structure and balanced acidity through its deliciously long finish.

Perfect match with Argentine local food including stews, barbecue and empanadas.

This wine may be stored for seven to nine years.

Professional Ratings

Lush, forward and complete, with a full mix of sweet and spicy aromas leading to bright berry flavors accented by licorice and vanilla from well-managed oak. Salentein is making better wines now than ever before, and this toasty, warming number is a prized bull that can only help Argentinean Malbec preserve its good name.

Bodegas Salentein, South America
Bodegas Salentein Salentein Winery Winery Image

Established in the late 1990s, Bodegas Salentein is a privately-owned estate of almost 5,000 acres, of which 1,124 acres are planted to vine. Located in Mendoza’s famed Uco Valley, Salentein produces a remarkable collection of wines from vineyards planted in some of the highest elevations on the planet.

As pioneers in Argentina’s Uco Valley, Salentein is committed to mastering the art of high altitude vineyard cultivation and producing the finest expression of South American wines while respecting the native land, people and culture. José Galante, Salentein’s distinguished Chief Winemaker, is one of the most influential in Argentina and has been called the “Father of Argentine Malbec.” Galante works closely with consultant and legendary winemaker Paul Hobbs to craft expressive wines with viticultural depth and a precise balance of flavors.

Bodegas Salentein is a wine destination like no other, and the property includes a world-class winery and cellars, a 125-acre nature preserve, the showpiece Killka Center for Culture and the Arts, a nearby lodge (the Posada Salentein, offering an elegant and relaxed retreat into nature), and the landmark Chapel of Gratitude, a non-denominational chapel built using ancient local stonework techniques.

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
