The soul of Valbelle is in the old vines. They produce the greatest grenache by growing their roots deeply in the soil. The freshness of Valbelle 2012 is excellent and there is a very good level of complexity, this is purely a question of vintage. The syrah is crucial to achieve the quality of the cuvée. For those who know the estate, we are talking about the "pavillon", which is the vine located just at the entrance of the estate. The co-fermentation of this exceptional syrah with our old grenache is a kind of a "synthesis" of the north and the south, and it is always a success, if they ferment together.
"A bigger, richer effort, the 2012 Gigondas Valbelle is brilliant! Seamless, full-bodied, rich and beautifully textured, as well as with considerable structure, it offers notions of creamy raspberry, creme de cassis, toast and licorice in its impressive, layered personality. It got a big "wow" in the notes and should be a wine to grab up on release.

Louis Barruol is the 14th generation Barruol to make wine at Saint Cosme. The Chateau was built in the late 16th Century on the site of a former Roman villa, and the remains of a Roman wine cellar, carved into the stone of the hillside, still exist in the chateau's caves. There are 37 acres of vineyards and the vines average 60 years of age. The old plots (pictured on the Gigondas label) and stitch across the escarpment of the ragged Dentelles de Montmirail, an oft-painted mountain range.
