Winemaker's Notes

#88 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010

100% Syrah, Limestony sands, red clay and rolling stones. Aged in vat. The wines are crunchy and ripe because of the dry summer. After the fresh 2008, we come back to a stronger wine with length. This wine, made to be drunk in its youth, is often quite surprising. It will be fresh and ready to be crunched. Blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, liquorish.

Critical Acclaim

"A lovely floral violet aroma leads the way, followed by good dark berry, tobacco and charcoal notes, with a dash of tarry grip on the finish. Pure and solid. Drink now through 2011."

This is a really nice Cotes du Rhone. Floral yet spicy nose. Full bodied and explosive. Great as a sipping wine or with hearty fare - I had it with seared tuna. I'm no expert, but I think it is meant to be enjoyed now and not cellared long.

I was really looking forward to trying out this particular vintage from this Saint Cosme, unfortunately it had all the hints of serious cork taint in the making. Given a few more years this would have been quite rancorous, as it was, even the subtle hint was too much to enjoy this wine! I'm disappointed.

Louis Barruol is the 14th generation Barruol to make wine at Saint Cosme. The Chateau was built in the late 16th Century on the site of a former Roman villa, and the remains of a Roman wine cellar, carved into the stone of the hillside, still exist in the chateau's caves. There are 37 acres of vineyards and the vines average 60 years of age. The old plots (pictured on the Gigondas label) and stitch across the escarpment of the ragged Dentelles de Montmirail, an oft-painted mountain range.

A Cote of Many Grapes The appellation of Cotes du Rhone encompasses much of the land of the area, not to mention much of the wine - over two-thirds of the wine produced here is of the Cotes-du-Rhone appellation. Wines here need only be from the Cotes de Rhone geographic area (which is fairly large) and consist of one or more of the 22 varieties permitted. Being such a wide...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
