Round Pond Estate Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
The nose on this vintage shows intensity with a dark fruit profile compared to typical Rutherford cabs. Initial top notes of brandied cherries, blueberry syrup and ripe brambly blackberry bushes are accented by tobacco leaf, cardamom and a hint of anise. As it presents, the palate burgeons in the mouth; starting compact and dense upfront it expands fully from front to back with a finish that lingers over a minute. It boasts a plush mouth feel that is soft on entry, framed by well structured tannins, a balanced acid profile and medium body. Flavors of espresso bean, pot de creme and frangellico give the impression of sweetness.
The Wine Advocate - "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is full of freshly cut flowers, violets, menthol crushed rocks and dark red cherries. There is a level of freshness and pure vibrancy in the 2010 that previous vintages don't have, most likely the result of the long, cool growing season. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is first-class. Nothing is out of place. In short, the 2010 Estate is gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023."
Wine Enthusiast - "A big, rich, vital Cabernet with immediate attraction that is deceptive. Sure, you can enjoy it now, while it's brimming in cherry jam and red and black currants with a finish of rich, caramelized oak. But it will soften and mellow over the next eight years, and maybe even longer. This is Round Pond’s best estate Cabernet in years.
Vinous / Antonio Galloni - "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is full of freshly cut flowers, violets, menthol crushed rocks and dark red cherries. Wine Spectator - "Complex and deftly balanced, this offers a firm, dense mix of loamy earth, classic dried herb, currant, anise and tobacco leaf. Ends up finishing like a classy Bordeaux"
International Wine Cellar - "Cool, soil-driven aromas and flavors of blue fruits, licorice and underbrush struck me as quite claret-like. At once glyceral and fresh, offering lovely depth and sweetness in the middle, with bright tannins giving the wine more obvious focus than the 2009 release. Shows a distinct ferrous quality. Finishes with building ripe tannins. This should age very well. In comparison to the 2009s, the estate's 2010 cabernets are more acid- than tannin-driven, according to winemaker Brown."

About Napa ValleyView a map of Napa Valley wineries
It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux Blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Notable FactsWithin the Napa Valley lie smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two is St.-Helena and finally, just grated an AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Mount Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
