Winemaker Notes

Roth Estate is committed to making wines with the truest and best expression of the diverse and idyllic growing conditions in Sonoma County. The 2009 Roth Estate Pinot Noir, grown on the Sonoma Coast, has pure, ripe varietal flavors of red and Bing cherries that are well-focused, elegant and persistent. It was aged in French-oak barrels for 18 months. It is a beautiful display of cool-climate Pinot Noir, with excellent depth, and complexity of flavors accented with hints of sweet oak.

Jesse Katz focuses on Russian River Valley vineyards with gravelly, well-drained soils for this wine. It has a spicy, conifer forest edge to contrast ripe, high-toned raspberry flavors. The finish is juicy, pungent and clean, with the fruit sweetness to match roast duck.

BOLD. UNAPOLOGETIC.

Roth Estate is a bold expression of luxury Bordeaux varietals from Sonoma County’s best AVAs. The winery was founded in 2001 simply as a tribute to the founder’s family name and a desire to produce bold, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Valley with the truest and best expression of the land. As our respect for the craft grew, so did our mission to create a bold expression of luxury Bordeaux varietals from Sonoma County’s best AVAs alongside our drive to embrace and share the “ultimate life” through celebrating friends and family and championing bold, and incredible wine, food and experiences.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
