Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

#55 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

Fine tiny bubbles and a long lasting mousse are the usual footprints of the L'Ermitage cuvée. This cuvée is showing great notes of "tarte tatin": baked apples and buttery crust, with notes of apricot and delicate vanilla bean. The mouthfeel is creamy, expresses flavors of quince and bread crust, with a clean and crisp yet long finish.

Critical Acclaim

"2003 was a great vintage for Roederer Estate. This, their top vintage wine, is very great, and the price is an absolute steal for this world class sparkler. It’s enormously rich in the strawberries from Pinot Noir and the limes from Chardonnay, while the toast and rich lees combine for a perfect champagne-style smokiness. And so smooth, it's like a kiss of silk. At the age of eight years, this wonderful wine is just getting started.

"This wine captures the cool tones of Anderson Valley fruit in a sophisticated sparkler, the marriage of pinot noir and chardonnay flavors transformed into lemon curd, white raspberry, bright apple and lasting spice. the tight balance keeps it fresh, while reserve wines add to its richness (the blend includes four percent of reserves from 1999). There’s nerve underneath the luscious texture, extending the sense of richness into finesse."
94 Points

"Elegant and sleek, yet complex, with cinnamon and green apple aromas that lead to rich flavors of pear and lemon custard layered with brioche and mineral. Drink now through 2015. 5,251 cases made."

I would say this is the best Champagne I have had to date (and I do love bubbly). My favorite up to now has been Veuve Clicquot, Yellow label, but I must say I'm rethinking that. I cannot improve upon Wine Enthusiast's description, it is perfectly accurate. Incredible value, will be ordering many more.

Great champagne given its price. This one is very rich and mellow, but its complex sweetness lasts and gives a feeling of well-designed texture of flavor. In my opinion, this is an excellent expression of elegance of sweetness required for champagne.

Learn About Vintage

Vintage Champagne and Sparkling Wines Vintage Champagne is made in particularly good years with optimum weather and the best grape selection. Some houses, like Dom Perignon, only make vintage Champagne, so they do not produce a wine every year and have no non-vintage bottlings. What makes vintage Champagne better? Well, status for one - many vintage Champagnes are...
