Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

L'Ermitage is Roederer Estate's special Tête de Cuvée, which has consistently been rated one of California's top sparkling wines since its debut in 1989. As in Champagne, L'Ermitage is made only in exceptional years, of pre-selected grapes that come from only the very best lots.

Fine tiny bubbles and a long lasting mousse are the usual footprints of the L'Ermitage cuvée. This cuvee of the Millenium is fruity (apple, peach) with a delicate bread crust note. Mouthfeel is on well-balanced wine with baked apple flavors and a long and round creamy finish.

Blend: 53% Chardonnay, 47% Pinot Noir, 3.5% aged reserve

The 2000 L'Ermitage Brut, made with about 11 grams per liter dosage and disgorged in January of 2006, opens with mature notes of crème caramel, quince paste, apple pie and cashews with notes of mushrooms and a salty undercurrent. The medium-bodied palate is surprisingly lively and fresh, walking a pretty line between orchard fruits, iodine, pastry and mineral character. It has smooth, rounded, creamy mousse and a very long, very layered finish. This is lovely and in a great spot for drinking right now.

COMMENTARY: Two of biggest guessing games in evaluating wines are: When will the wine be ready? Will we like the wine when it has sufficiently aged? The 2000 L'Ermitage is fully aged and speaks purely of maturity. TASTING NOTES: This wine is all about nuances. It shows dried leaves, autolysis, yeastiness, and lots of earth. Pair it with a strong double crème cow's milk and Granny Smith apples and enjoy the flavors of the Anderson Valley. (Tasted: April 4, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Roederer Estate, California
Roederer Estate Roederer Estate Winery Image

Founded in 1982, Roederer Estate is nestled in Mendocino County’s fog-shrouded, Anderson Valley. As the California property of Champagne Louis Roederer, Roederer Estate builds upon a centuries-old tradition of fine winemaking. Roederer's unique winemaking style is based on two elements: complete ownership of its vineyards and the addition of oak-aged reserve wines to each year's blend or cuvee to create complex, dry and harmonious sparkling wines.

The crisp, fresh and rich flavors of Roederer Estate sparkling wines reflect the cool Anderson Valley that is home to their family-owned estate's 600 acres of vineyards. This protected valley in Northern California provides the ideal ripening conditions for their 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. The blending team is comprised of the winemakers from the California property as well as from Champagne Louis Roederer, ensuring that Roederer Estate remains the most French of the California sparklers.
