Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Symmetry is a luxurious bouquet of blackberries, black cherry, plum and crushed lavender which unfold on the palate with silky layers of black fruits, dark chocolate covered espresso beans and baking spices. This wine is rich, harmonious and elegant with a long, lingering finish.

Pair this wine now with a Beef Bourguignon, a lamb roast or a roasted vegetable tart or cellar for enjoyment for years to come.

One of America's most reliable wineries for its high-quality range of wines and consistent supply in the marketplace, Rodney Strong Vineyards has produced an excellent Meritage Red wine. The 2013 Rodney Strong Symmetry brings an elegant combination of ripe fruit, savory spices, and oak tannins to the fore. Pair this delicious wine with a King Henry the VIII cut of prime rib, and you will discover why Bordeaux grape varieties married so well with red meat dishes. (Tasted: December 3, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Lastly, the 2013 Symmetry is a Bordeaux blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec and 4% Merlot. This is a suave, supple-textured wine with sweeter tannin, more forward personality, and loads of red and black currant fruit as well as some licorice and underbrush. It is a beauty. Medium to full-bodied and very elegant, this wine was aged 16 months in 100% French oak prior to being bottled. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

This combines all five Bordeaux red varieties into a likable, integrated and smoothened experience on the palate that lingers in bold, concentrated flavors of blackberry and cocoa. A juicy core on the midpalate slides effortlessly into a spicy finish of clove.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Alexander Valley Wine

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
