Winemaker Notes

The 1999 Chalk Hill Chardonnay exemplifies what happens when a winemaker patiently waits out the bad weather and hopes for better conditions. High temperatures in October allowed grapes to ripen to full maturity and excellent flavor development. Fully expressive of the struggle of the harvest year, our Chalk Hill Chardonnay displays a medium rich texture with flavors in abundance. Grapefruit and Asian pear flavors are delicately touched with essence of lavender. A bouquet of granny smith apples and fresh cut Hawaiian pineapple intermingle with hints of nutmeg and wet granite. Barrel aging in predominately French Oak barrels and a nice crisp balance serve as the framework for this luxurious wine. I look forward to serving this wine with a rich soup of Butternut Squash or a pasta with smoked salmon and a creamy dill sauce. -Rick Sayre, Winemaker

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A Sonoma sub-appellation whose boundaries cover the northeastern corner of the Russian River Valley AVA, the Chalk Hill growing area is named after its unique chalky and white, volcanic ash soils. This terrain has proven successful with white varieties, namely Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc.
