Winemaker Notes

Our 1998 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignons dark ruby color tips off a deep and luscious quality throughout. The nose captures your attention with an essence of a dark Lincoln rose, white chocolate and a hint of cumin. Medium-bodied, long, and lingering in the mouth, the wine is packed with flavors of dark chocolate, currant and licorice.

I am fortunate to have the best barrels made to showcase a wine that has come from the field almost perfect. This vintage was aged in a combination of new and older French and American barrels. The combination of age and type of barrel retained the wines excellent balance and depth of fruit while adding an appropriate amount of spice and toast.

I will serve this wine with a thinly sliced teriyaki steak or a hardy vegetable & pasta soup. -Richard B. Sayre, Winemaker

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
