Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

A full-flavored yet finely structured Cabernet of great appeal: black berries, dried leaves and fine gravelly tannin, reflect an outstanding year.

Critical Acclaim

"Crimson-purple; a wine that exudes its class and character, with blackcurrant fruit leading the way on the bouquet and palate, and supported by ripe, rounded tannins plus quality French oak."
94 Points

"A sculpted, refined expresion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Oatley's 2010 combines hints of mint and dark berries into a wine that offers clean, pure fruit, subtle oak shadings and a long, silky finish. Editors' Choice."
90 Points

"Saturated ruby. Pungent aromas of cherry pit, cassis and pipe tobacco, with a peppery overtone adding urgency. Smoky and penetrating on the palate, offering subtly sweet dark fruit flavors that show a youthfully chewy texture. Closes spicy and long, with slow-mounting sweetness and smooth, well-knit tannins adding shape."
90 Points

"A pure, black currant scented Cabernet, this wine's plump fruit is restrained by tight, herbal spice. The texture lends a sense of refinement in its light feel. Pour it with flank steak."

Rating: 2.5 Stars This wine was underwhelming given the ratings and professional reviews I've read previously. For someone who likes bigger WA or CA cabs, this wine never seemed to open up to what I'd expected. May have to wait a few years to add more stars. Quote of the evening: ...you said one of reviewers mentioned 'best served with flank steak', did they also include 'as a marinade'?. Overall: not a bad value, but better options are available at a similar price point (e.g. Chateau Ste. Michelle Cold Creek Cabernet). Upside: will make a very good housewarming gift.

Learn About Robert Oatley Map ItMap It

Famed Australian Vintners, Bob and Sandy Oatley, founders of Rosemount Estate, began their next wine venture to pay homage to the many terrific regions of Australia and the grapes most suited to the terroir.

Wherever he makes wine, Bob Oatley's underlying philosophy is to find the right vineyard with the right soil and match it to the right variety.

With the guidance of winemaker, Larry Cherubino, Robert Oatley Vineyards shares the expression of regions, such as Margaret River, McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley, Great Southern and Central Ranges.

Learn About Margaret River

Located in the southwest area of Western Australia, the country's largest state, Margaret River wine growing region is on a peninsula jutting out into the Indian Ocean. The climate is reminiscent of Bordeaux in some ways, leading many winemakers to plant grapes of that nature, such as Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot. Other varieties that have found results are Chardonnay & Riesling.

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
