Winemaker Notes

Polished but assertive, this wine delivers its delicious impact in a velvet glove. The wine's deep, dark color signals the density of its flavors and opulent texture. In the nose, ripe black fruit aromas merge with hints of cedar, black licorice and a pinch of nutmeg and clove. In the mouth, the wine has a silky entry. Dense, fleshy flavors of blackberry, black plum and cassis envelop the mid-palate, enhanced by elegantly powerful tannins. The rich finish lasts forever. A freshly youthful wine with the confident authority that comes from excellent vineyard sources and superlative winemaking.

Blend: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

    Number 9 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2007!

Weaves together a complex array of ripe, rich currant, anise, smoky oak and black cherry. Dense, concentrated and persistent, with great depth and focus, ending with an amazingly long, richly flavored finish. Best from 2008 through 2018.

Rich, well-ripened and in all ways keenly keyed on classic Napa Valley Cabernet fruit, Mondavi's latest reserve bottling shows exceptional depth and fruity stuffing with subtle accents of briar and loam scattered throughout. While its oak is plentiful, it never stands out more than it should, and the wine shows real crafting in its balance of tannins and acid. It may check in at 15.0% alcohol, but it shows little evidence of the fact, and its combination of richness and careful winemaking makes a convincing argument against the all too fashionable whine that high ripeness necessarily begets soulless, second-class wines.

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which mostly comes from To-Kalon, has a relatively small production in this vintage (7,500 cases). The wine has a dense purple color and a wonderful, sweet, almost St.-Julien like nose of licorice, red and black currants, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, but authoritatively flavored, this wine is still young, rich, and very fine.

One of the ripest, highest alcohol Mondavi Reserve Cabs in memory, this wine is forward in cassis and cherry flavors, and while the tannins are pretty sturdy, it’s sweet and soft enough to drink now. It definitely has the rich mouthfeel you want in a pricey Napa Cab. But it’s young; cellar this one until at least 2010.

Robert Mondavi, California
Robert Mondavi Winery Video

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 by winemaking pioneer Robert Mondavi, whose vision was to create Napa Valley wines that could stand in the company of the world’s finest. It was the first major winery built in Napa Valley in the three decades following the repeal of Prohibition, Robert Mondavi Winery created the foundation for the modern-day California wine industry. Today, Robert Mondavi Winery continues to pursue the fullest expression of Napa Valley terroir in wines that are also varietally authentic. Mondavi chose to situate his estate next to To Kalon Vineyard, one of the most coveted wine growing parcels in the world, known for producing award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon and for its Sauvignon Blanc. One of the first goals Robert Mondavi set for himself was recreating Sauvignon Blanc, which was, at the time a sweet, unnuanced wine. He sought inspiration in Loire Valley Pouilly Fumé, enlivening it with a uniquely California profile. He named the delightfully rich and refined yet bright, fresh wine he created Fumé Blanc. It’s Sauvignon Blanc, plus so much more. Released in 1968, Fumé Blanc remains Mr. Mondavi’s signature and one of Robert Mondavi Winery’s most popular wines.

The first vintage (1966) of Robert Mondavi Winery's Cabernet Sauvignon is released. A shot heard throughout the Valley, it would inspire the waves of pioneers to follow. In time, the path Robert Mondavi cleared would lead to the creation of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, Merlots and Sauvignon Blancs in the world.

“Our mission at Robert Mondavi Winery is to produce wines of elegance and complexity that are recognized globally for their exceptional quality,” says Geneviève Janssens, chief winemaker at Robert Mondavi Winery.
