  A dead ringer for a Cote Rotie, the 2013 Syrah Foothills Reserve (100% Syrah aged in 25% new French oak) has closed down slightly since last year and is showing a touch less fruit and more tannin. It offers lots of violets, pepper, leather, and red and blackberry fruit in a medium-bodied, fresh, focused package. Give bottles another year or two and drink through 2026.

  This is 100 perfecnt Syrah from the Foothills in the Sun vineyard. It adds a pinch of tobacco leaf and dashi to its exotic panoply of flavors, the fruit dark and plummy, energized by a jolt of acidity. It's geared toward red meats, like slow-smoked brisket.
