Realm Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Representing our 8th vintage from this famous gravel vineyard on the west side of Oakville, this wine is comprised of 4 different blocks of Clone 4 and 337 Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in 100% new French oak Taransaud barrels. 250 cases
Probably the densest To Kalon bottling to date, this wine exhibits aromas of crème de cassis, blackberry and chocolate. This full-bodied wine has the right balance of density, acidity and structure that will lead to a long and fulfilling life for those with patience.
Wine Spectator - "Deliciously rich blackberry, mocha, black licorice and spicy floral scents lead to a ripe, fleshy and full-bodied palate. Pure and persistent, this is long and elegant on the finish. Drink now through 2025."
The Wine Advocate - "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard bursts onto the palate with mocha, spices, dark fruit, new leather, all of which come together seamlessly in the glass. There are plenty of tannins here, but the fruit is so textured they are barely perceptible. The 2009 is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
Realm is one of the most exciting young wineries in Napa Valley. Wendell Laidley and Juan Mercado founded Realm in 2002. Since then, they have put together an impressive collection of vineyard sources. Benoit Touquette, a protege of Michel Rolland, is now the winemaker. Rolland collaborated on the blends beginning in 2009. This is a gorgeous set of wines that deserves considerable attention."
Realm Cellars was founded in 2002 with a simple mission - to produce superior quality Bordeaux varietals in limited quantities from the fiest fruit sources in Napa Valley. Together with winemaker Benoit Touquette and consulting enologist, Michel Rolland, the winemaking philosophy at Realm Cellars has remained consistent with the goal of producing singular wines that represent intense and delicious portraits of the vineyard sources from which they are derived. About Napa ValleyView a map of Napa Valley wineries
It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux Blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Notable FactsWithin the Napa Valley lie smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two is St.-Helena and finally, just grated an AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Mount Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.
