The R Collection Field Blend harkens back to the early days in California viticulture when vineyards had several different varietals planted together, and an entire vineyard would be harvested and vinified together, often producing remarkably unique wines from multiple different varietals. Our winemaking team has revived this tradition of blending multiple varietals together to produce a standout wine. The New is again the Old: our first vintage of the Field Blend is a return, as it were, to the source – homage to one of the original winegrowing practices in California.
The 2007 R Collection Field Blend brings together 7 varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are grown on our own estate vineyards in Rutherford and St. Helena, and by our close partners in the Napa Valley and further afield. 71% of the blend was aged in oak barrels over 18 months, bringing complexity, spice and just enough structure.
Our 2007 R Collection Field Blend is a balanced, structured,
medium-to-full bodied wine with firm, juicy tannins and bright
acidity. The nose exudes seductive red fruit aromas of ripe raspberries,
cherries, boysenberries, and cooked plums. The palate reveals
flavors of red currant and blackberry jam with earthy hints of
tobacco leaves. The finish is surprisingly lengthy with a lovely texture
and exceptional balance.
I drink red daily and have my favorites. Purchased this on a whim. Gave it some time to breathe. As I sipped first glass I wondered how wines like this make it to retail ... who drinks them? Too sharp, too acid, makes it impossible to flavor taste, if there is one. Of course, it may be that I can't appreciate what others may find in this wine.
