Bordeaux Red Blends from Sonoma County, California
The 2007 Pickberry is dark and dense in appearance. Perfumed ripe Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot scents of red currant, cassis, cured leaf tobacco and musk herald the chewy cassis flavors that highlight the impressively dense, spicy, mineral- driven firm, floral finish. This wine will age to graceful elegance in 10 to 15 years.
Blend: 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon
International Wine Cellar - "Musky aromas of red- and blackcurrant, tobacco, cocoa powder and herbs. Sappy and fresh, offering impressively concentrated red and black fruit flavors in a youthfully linear style. Tangy minerality adds lift to the back end, which is complicated by a medicinal character. Finishes firm, with note of cherry and candied flowers and dusty tannins. I'd bet on this aging very slowly. "
Wine & Spirits - "Joel Peterson's classic blend of merlot (58 percent) and cabernet sauvignon is packed with flavor detail in 2007. It tastes vinous rather than bluntly fruited as it evolves across the palate, yielding tart red berries, floral scents and game. The tannins have reached a chocolate ripeness, while the wine shows some acidity, framing it along the edges. Decant it for a thick-cut sirloin."

Ravenswood Vineyard Designate wines are made employing what winemaker Joel Peterson refers to as “stubborn and impractical” Old World enological practices. Wines are fermented in small wooden tanks using wild, natural yeasts and punched down by hand three to five times per day. Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about half as much wine as its northeasterly neighbor. Because of its vast size, however, Sonoma is able to achieve far more diversity within its borders, which include sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid-back and down-to-earth, but the wines are serious and well-made, ranging in style from subtle and elegant to rich and powerful. Grape varieties are more varied here, from Pinot Noir and Zinfandel to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Notable FactsThe largest sub-AVAs of Sonoma include Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. Each sub-AVA, with its own micro-climate, is unique in its grape varieties and styles of wine. Dry Creek makes a mean Zinfandel while Russian River produces stand up Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Alexander Valley makes some of the better Cabernet Sauvignons in the county and Sonoma Valley creates excellent wines from all the above varieties. Other grapes found throughout Sonoma include Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah.

6 ratings, 4 with reviews410/30/2012Well, to give away the surprise, it certainly does! This is a classic Bordeaux style blend of Merlot (58%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (42%) from Sonoma Valley. This wine is a bright ruby color in the glass, and the nose is a fragrant blend of red fruit, tobacco, licorice and musk. The taste is surprisingly fruit forward, with hints of cherry and red currant at the front end, giving way to some complex mineral flavors mid-palate. The finish is wonderfully dry with the tangyness of the tannins providing a nice firm finish. The wine is still a little young, and will likely age quite well over the next decade or two.
