Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.9%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Crafted in the heart of Sonoma County's "Zin Zone," Rancho Zabaco wines showcase the decadent flavor characteristics of some of Sonoma's most sought after vineyards. Flavors of juicy lingonberry, blueberry syrup, elderberry preserves and huckleberry smoothie develop in your mouth you realize that there's more to the flavors than just berries. Named for an historic Mexican land grant, Rancho Zabaco wines are an authentic expression of a special place and time in Sonoma's history.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2011 Zinfandel Heritage Vines is a ridiculously delicious wine for the money. Juicy dark cherries, tobacco, menthol and cloves positively burst from the glass. There is no shortage of varietal character in this plush, juicy Zinfandel. At just $15 a bottle, the 2011 is a steal. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. "

Classic Zin and a great value. Medium bodied with plenty of black and red berry fruits on the nose and palate. Finish with a hint of black pepper.

Style: Earth & Spicy
I am a Rombauer Zinfandel fan and am always looking for an affordable alternative to Rombauer. While this wine doesn't have the complexity and is not "quite" as fruit forward, it is very nice with good spice and a leather finish. As a day to day drinker good for sipping bbq, Tex-Mex, it's great! My only criticism and it's an odd one is the cork. Yes, the cork. I had problems removing each and everyone of 4 bottles I bought. Each one broke in the bottle and required switching from an electric cork screw to a traditional cork screw. I had to rescue a few bits of cork from my glass. A higher quality cork would be much appreciated.

Learn About Rancho Zabaco

Rancho Zabaco is named for one of the original Mexican land grants in Sonoma County. Sonoma County encompasses the Dry Creek Valley, the area from which Rancho Zabaco’s grapes are drawn. The wines are inspired by the bold spirit of the Spanish and Mexican pioneers who settled this rugged land.

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Zinfandel

Zinfandel(ZIN-fahn-dell) American Grape Zinfandel the American - or Californian - grape. Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California. During Prohibition, many Zinfandel vines survived as the high-yielding grape was popular both for home winemaking and communion wine, which is...
