Ramey Jericho Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California
This is a forty-acre vineyard at the base of Mt. St. Helena, northeast of Calistoga. Very steeply terraced, it was planted in 1990 and 1993. The soil is a shallow clay-loam atop white volcanic ash, which provides excellent drainage and limits yields to between 1.4 and 2.7 tons per acre. This vintage is blended of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc.
"The top wine, the Jericho Canyon Proprietary Red, emerges from a vineyard northeast of Calistoga. The inky/purple-colored 2001 Jericho Canyon Proprietary Red offers up a sumptuous perfume of licorice, espresso roast, graphite, blackberries, and currants. Unctuously-textured, with tremendous purity, high tannin, and a long finish, it reminds me of the old style vintages of Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon from the late sixties to the mid-seventies."
The Wine Advocate
"Deep, concentrated and conveying a fine sense of potency in its complex, richly oaked and optimally ripened black cherry and currant aromas, this big, broad-beamed opus is positively plush on the palate with a wealth of well-extracted fruit that is met step for step by lots of lovely sweet oak spice."
"A Bordeaux grape expression from Napa, ripe, complex and concentrated, a transitional mix of youth and maturity. Firm, structured and ending with a deep, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.—2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2016. 1,700 cases made. "
"Full medium ruby. Superripe nose is distinctly porty yet bright. Then lush and deep in the mouth, with explosive, superripe flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Boasts terrific sweetness and depth but distinctly bound-up today, even a bit medicinal. Finishes with powerful but thoroughly ripe tannins. Not now as harmonious as it seemed from barrel, but this may well merit a higher score with bottle aging.
Rating: 91(+?) "

Learn About Napa Valley
It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
