Winemaker's Notes

The Hillside Estate Syrah shows notes of black pepper, raspberries, cola and Provençal herbs. The flavors round out into friendly accents of sweet French oak. This is a high-quality wines that could benefit from a few years in the cellar.

Critical Acclaim

"Black cherries, plums, menthol, licorice and tobacco all burst from the glass in the 2008 Syrah Bien Nacido Hillside Estate. This is one of the most intense, powerful wines I have ever tasted from Qupe, but there is more than enough depth and pure texture in the fruit to fill out the broad shoulders nicely. A dark, brooding finish full of intrigue adds character and complexity. The 2008 is big, explosive and exuberant. And drop-dead gorgeous. If opened today, the 2008 needs quite a bit of air, but it is fabulous. Bob Lindquist gave the 2008 20 months in Francois Freres barrels, 50% new."

"Massive blackberry, cherry, currant and mocha flavors characterize this dry, potent Syrah. At the age of five, it’s round and mellow in the mouth, with firm tannins and a gentle scour of acidity. Just beginning to show its stuff. Drink now–2018."

"Glass-staining ruby. Vibrant aromas of cassis, cherry-cola, candied licorice and Asian spices. Juicy, supple and sweet, with intense cassis and red berry flavors complicated by notes of lavender, licorice, fresh herbs and black pepper. Very syrah in character. Bright acidity adds cut to the long, gently tannic, penetrating finish."
92 Points

"Grown at a five-acre block planted for Bob Lindquist in 1992, this is pent-up in dense tannin and wood, along with a suggestion of salted plum fruit. With a day of air the tannins are still resolute, but the wine is more layered—its stony, foresty savor supporting a bright ping of cool blue fruit. There’s plenty of acidity to freshen the imposing frame, it just needs time—a 2001 Hillside Estate tasted recently was just hitting its stride; a ’96 was perfectly resolved."

Style: Big & Bold
A wet bold red with a little bit of a spicy after taste. Based on the other reviews I plan to try it with steak. Usually I prefer a little more fruity, shiraz. So far Jim Berry Shiraz has been my favorite.
