Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This wine is 100% roussanne from Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley.

This wine is quite different than our previous vintages...leaner, focused with more nerve. The aromas show classic roussanne characters of hazelnut, peach pit, a slight floral note and great minerality. In the mouth this wine grabs you from the start with refreshing, mouthwatering acidity. This is a wine that needs food to show off and also needs some cellar time to show its best...a few years will help but I predict that this wine won't even begin to show its best until about 10 years down the road! This may be our best roussanne yet, only time will tell.

Critical Acclaim

"Green-tinged gold. Wet stone, mint, orange and yellow plum on the nose. Dry and tightly wound, offering tangy citrus and pit fruit flavors and a strong mineral underpinning. A bit unyielding initially but aeration brought up sweet melon and singed orange flavors. No excess fat on the wine!. Finishes nervy, focused and dry: I'm not sure I'd have pegged this as a New World wine."
