This wine is 100% Chardonnay from Block Eleven, a custom, hillside planting at Bien Nacido, planted exclusively for Qupé in 1997. A west by northwest exposure doesn't allow as much direct sun. This cooler exposure gives a nice minerality and firm acidity to the wine. 2003 was a fairly warm vintage and riper wine than I normally like to make… sometimes you just have to take what Mother Nature gives you.
The aromas show minerals, custard, a bit of flinty lees and lots of juice fruit. This is a mouth coating wine, but it still sits lively on the palate. Drink this over the next few years while you're waiting for the '01 and ‘02's to come around.
