Winemaker's Notes

#42 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

Blend of Alfrocheiro (early ripening Dão grape with good color, rich tannin, and balance of strawberry-like fruit and acidity), Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo in Spain, an early ripening varietal which produces good yields and flavors reminiscent of red fruits, plums, strawberries and blackberries. It has firm tannins and responds well to oak aging) and Touriga Nacional (One of Portugal's signature grapes, indigenous to the Dão. It has firm, rich color and complex aromas of raspberries, ripe blackcurrants, savory herbs, violets and licorice.).

Critical Acclaim

"A well-structured, muscular red, with a touch of Asian spice to the wild plum and dried raspberry flavors. Beef and mineral notes mark the finish. Distinctive, with a very sauvage allure. Drink now through 2015. 10,000 cases imported."

Style: Smooth & Supple
Wonderful wine, had it once with braised beef, another time just sipping late at night with chocolate. Strong dark fruit flavors, but delivered very smoothly, with a nice finish.

Style: Earthy & Spicy
Bought this online for $9.99 mostly out of curiousity. Rated 90 points by WS & #42 in Wine Spector's Top 100 of 2011. I'm not very familiar with Portuguese wine so I thought it would be a nice bottle to try. Red blend: Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz & Touriga Naciona grapes. I brought it to a Christmas party to share. Opened up the bottle to let it breath for about 1 hour prior to pouring (as was suggested). Dark ruby color, medium bodied with nice red/black fruit with well balanced tannins. I enjoyed this wine. Great for price point.

Inspired in Quinta de Cabriz, a property with a magnificent manor house and chapel of the XVII Century, Dão Sul has become a reference of winemaking in the Dão. Of the vineyards surrounded by pine trees, the grapes produced in integrated production give way to wines with balanced...

The table wines of the region have improved dramatically in the past few decades. The winemaking areas trickle down the country's narrow shape, bordered by the Atlantic on the west and Spain on the east. Notable...

There are a multitude of grape varieties throughout the world, however, in a Darwinian sense, survival of the fittest only brings us wines made from grapes that can adapt to changing climates and winemaking techniques. Notable Facts Our other red wines primarily consists of...
