Winemaker's Notes

Exclusive Premiere Napa Valley Wine
2012 Auction Lot #171: Only 5 cases produced

We've taken a special barrel from our sixth vintage for this special lot, made up of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Winston Hill Vineyard in Rutherford. The wine has rested in 100% new French oak barrels since harvest 2009. If there is a single characteristic that we strive for in this wine, it is balance. Our winemaker, Todd Graff, is a genius at creating wines with seamless complexity, and this fourth effort goes a great distance in helping establish that very focus. The 2009 Promise is a deep, dark, purple color. It delivers aromas of mocha and sweet caramel, layered with lightly toasted spices and graphite, and a seductive blend of blackberries and brown sugar round out the aromas. Plum preserves and sweet tannins lead to a supple and fleshy, yet balanced, wine with a firm backbone. This concentrated blend shows outstanding purity and youthfulness.

Aging Process: 36 months in new French oak barrels

Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
