Winemaker Notes

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon has a vivid ruby red color with a tinge of purple. Its aromas are rich and suggestive of blackberry and blueberry with hints of oak and cinnamon. Smooth with a firm structure, it has a fruit-filled finish that lingers.

The Stianti Mascheroni family, owners of Prelius are leaders in Tuscany's organic viticultural movement. They are committed to organic farming at the Prelius estate. These efforts are aided by both nature and man. Mother Nature does her part by providing continual breezes throughout the day and night, which keep humidity at bay, preventing fungus and mold. Insect pests are controlled by an innovative natural technique referred to as sexual confusion, which is accomplished by releasing pheromones to confuse the males, who then cannot locate females and reproduce. And, all fertilization is achieved with organic manure.

Prelius practices organic farming certified by the EU.

The estate’s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Prelius emerges from the glass with generous dark fruit, grilled herbs and spices. The Prelius is an especially plump Cabernet Sauvignon from Maremma. There isn’t a ton of varietal character in the glass, but the wine’s overall balance and sense of proportion are terrific. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.

Touted as a natural wine, this shows very pretty currant, plum and berry notes on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied, with polished tannins and a fresh finish. Drink now. 2,500 cases made.

Prelius, Italy
Prelius Cabernet National Park and Tirrenean Sea Winery Image
Prelius is the name given by the Romans to the ancient costal lake of Prile. Already with the Etruscans the land surrounding the lake was a flourishing community dedicated to fishing and to the commerce of salt. The coastal lake used to lay from the Argentario peninsula to Castiglione della Pescaia, separated from the sea by a sandy strip that is now the marvelous pine-wood of Grosseto. Prile, where our vineyards are located, is 2 miles away from Castiglione della Pescaia along the slopes of the hilly amphitheater surrounding the ancient lake.

In this hilly amphitheater called Prelius, the vineyard is organically farmed by the Stianti Mascheroni family flourishes. This vineyard, also called Prelius, is the first venture outside of Chianti Classico for the Stianti Mascheroni family, leaders in Tuscany's organic viticultural movement.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
