Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Alcohol By Volume: 14.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Brilliant ruby red with purple hues, this wine has intense aromas of red cherries, violets and currants, followed by a hint of spice. Wellstructured and balanced on the palate, Rubio is easygoing and versatile, but also notable for its intensity and elegance. Try it with antipasti or tapas, pasta dishes with tomato sauce, or grilled sausages—a perfect bytheglass selection.

Critical Acclaim

"Though ripe, this shows a lively structure to its black cherry, raspberry and toasty vanilla flavors. Well-balanced, with a moderate finish. San giovese. Drink now through 2013. 80,000 cases made."
88 Points

"The 2009 Rubio bursts from the glass with layers of dark fruit that build with notable intensity. This plump, engaging wine is a huge overachiever in its price range. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. "

Learn About Sangiovese

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
