Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 15.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Intense and bright ruby red with garnet highlights, it expresses the typical aromas of violets and small red berries, followed by spicy nuances of walnut husk. The wine has a deeply-woven, robust texture with a persistent finish and well-rounded tannins.

The food pairings for Brunello Riserva must be in line with its elevated stature, such as the traditional 'Fiorentina' Tbone steak, dishes prepared with wild boar, suckling pig and game. It also pairs well with very mature cheeses, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Tuscan pecorino, provolone and Castelmagno.

Critical Acclaim

"A wine with dark fruit, such as ripe strawberries and raspberries on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with round and velvety tannins. Layered and beautiful. Better in 2014."
94 Points

"Lush aromas of sweet cherry and plum, oak spice and chocolate permeate this modern-style red. Its tannins are very aggressive, coming as much from the oak as the grape, as a vivid acidity keeps it focused and long. Best from 2016 through 2032. "

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
