Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Piaggione offers an intense garnet color and a complex bouquet of fruit and floral notes. A solid tannic structure frames the palate with hints of coffee, tobacco and chocolate lingering on the finish. Concentrated, intense, and persistent. This is an artisanal Brunello, and an authentic gem from Montalcino.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Piaggione is an understated, classy wine. Dried cherries, flowers and spices are framed by silky tannins in an elegant, layered style. Sweet tobacco, anise, fennel and herbs add complexity on the round, supple close. I am not sure the Riserva is worth the premium in 2004, but it is undoubtedly quite pretty. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024. "
94 Points

"Subtle smoke, meat and ripe fruit aromas lead to a full body, with soft, velvety tannins and a long, juicy finish. Turns big and chewy. Needs a little time to soften. Best after 2011."
93 Points

"Medium-dark red. Initially reduced nose opens with air to reveal enticing aromas of ripe red cherry, white pepper, and minerals. Fleshy, dense and sweet, with ripe strawberry and red cherry flavors complicated and enlivened by cedar and bay leaf. Finishes with noteworthy minerality and a trace of heat."

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
