The 2008 Pillar Box Red has a dark colour and a vibrant purple hue, with aromas of fresh blueberry fruit, liquorice, dried mint and cinnamon oak undertones. The palate is dense and juicy, with flavours of fresh blackcurrant and cherry combined with aniseed, dried thyme and mocha oak characters. The wine is rich and full bodied, well balanced and seamless with soft, persistent tannins.
"A perennial Best Buy in these pages, the 2008 Pillar Box Red does not disappoint. A blend of 66% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Merlot, it is purple-colored with an enticing nose of cherry blossom, cinnamon, blueberry, and licorice. Ripe and rich for its humble price, it has plenty of savory fruit, good balance, and a seamless, fruit-filled finish.
The Wine Advocate
"Glass-staining ruby. Ripe blueberry and boysenberry aromas, with a smoky undertone. Round, jammy black and blue fruit flavors stay just this side of candied and show no rough edges. A subtle note of bitter chocolate adds grip. This rich wine lacks complexity but delivers plenty of supple fruit."
International Wine Cellar
"Slightly diffuse colour; a neatly put together light- to medium bodied blend (Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot), spicy/earthy shiraz the leader, but combining well with the other components."
Australian Wine Companion
Fruity and bold, very Australian. Not to everyone's taste, but I enjoyed it as did several other drinkers. Will repurchase.
I have had this wine for several years and it is a very dependable Aussie. Not too dry and suits most tastes. Not big and bold but a nice everyday wine. I can buy it at home a little less than the regular price so I buy a few bottles when it is on sale.
For the price its great - good table/picnic wine.
