Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Very intense, almost impenetrable, clear ruby red colour. Aromas of ripe fruit, embellished with elegant hints of tobacco, chocolate and sweet spices. On the palate it expresses a powerful structure but also, with a measured balance, soft fruit against the round and mature tannins. The finish is long and fruity.

It goes well with red meat and game, extra mature cheeses and quality cured meats.

Professional Ratings

The 2000 Carmignano Riserva is simply the best of the appellation, rich and potent on the nose, an explosion of perfectly ripe berry fruit, minerals, and tar, and a palate of exceptional concentration, roundness, intensity, and velvet. Among the unrestrained admirers of this wine is Andrea Franchetti of Tenuta di Trinoro, not only an outstanding producer but also a connoisseur of superior winemaking.

Loads of blackberry, cherry and game aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with big, soft tannins and a long finish. Impressive. A new winery for me that's very good indeed.

Piaggia Piaggia Vineyards Winery Image

Piaggia is located right in the heart of Carmignano. The total vineyard extension is approximately 15 hectares, divided between the area of S. Cristina a Mezzana and the municipality of Poggio a Caiano, both areas with a great potential for top quality wines. Mauro Vannucci started this activity in 1990 because of his great passion for great red wines, with the aim to produce wines up to the standard of Carmignano appellation. In its almost 20 years of existence, Piaggia has managed to solidly establish its place among the great wineries of the classic Tuscan DOC of Carmignano, being called by Gambero Rosso “one of the best wineries in the region of Carmignano, rather, in Tuscany.”

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
