Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2008 vintage was warm to hot, with a prolonged heatwave in mid-March. However, grapes picked before the elevated temperatures were delivered to the winery in excellent condition, resulting in good varietal definition and balanced flavors.

Color: Crimson red.

Nose: Rich Christmas cake and summer pudding aromas are obvious on the nose with more subtle cinnamon / spicy oak notes adding complexity on the nose.

Palate: Deeper, darker fruits are more obvious on the palate with plums, blueberry and dark cherries. Tannins and fruit are well balanced with Shiraz providing a fleshy mouthfeel and Cabernet delivering length and structure, with varietal, chalky tannins. Dark chocolate notes linger on the finish in typical Koonunga Hill style.

Critical Acclaim

"Good hue, although deeper than the Seventy Six; this sets the pattern for a wine that is light- to medium-bodied, with blackberry, plum and black cherry fruit, much more suited to early consumption than Seventy Six, but marketing minds often move in mysterious ways."
89 Points

"Inky violet color. Cassis, cherry and tobacco on the nose. Showing its cabernet element right now, offering zesty red- and blackcurrant flavors and a bitter cherry pit quality. Tannins frame the sweet fruit on the finish, which is attractively sweet, focused and persistent."

Learn About South Australia

The majority of wines from Australia come from this state. Home to the red wine regions of McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Barossa Valley, South Australia produces some of the finest red wines of the country, and some say in the world. White wines gain their reputation from the distinctive Rieslings of Clare Valley.
