Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Front Label
Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Bright garnet. Savory spices (paprika, curry leaf) with beetroot, blackcurrant conserve and cassis varietal markers regally ascend.Less noble yet endearing wafts of Mediterranean meat(s)-on-a-spit, and a suggestion of oak/char. Darkened tarry and bitumen aromas abound. Tight, solid, assertive – handles oak well.Impressive mid-palate adorned with pronounced Cabernet tannins and a refreshing acidity. Reassuring flavors including black olive and pomegranate alongside a fanciful impression of carpaccio slivers of seared venison. A (powdery) sprinkling of cocoa powder, mocha, shaved bitter chocolate and walnut husk adds further interest.

Drink: 2017-2030.

Plenty of distinctive cabernet character, all black olive and cassis, dusty oak notes and a gently leafy undertone, some redder fruits too. The palate's assertive, taut and crunchy, this is an upbeat cabernet with attractive purity, oak rides in time with the fruit, cassis and hints of chocolate. Acidity stretches the finish, tannins frame it straight and true. Best from 2018.

One of the world's most beautiful expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Penfolds Bin 407 shows up with fine and persistent aromas and flavors—ripe red fruits, delicate savory herbs and pleasing black earth notes. The wine's long finish invites a pairing with a well-aged white cheddar. Drinking pretty well now. (Tasted: May 9, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 opens with notes of menthol, eucalyptus, blackcurrant cordial and black cherry pie plus underlying cedar, toast and dark chocolate hints. Full, generously fruited and wonderfully forward with firm tannins and lively acidity, it offers a beautiful expression of the best of South Australia Cabernet. Range: 91(+?)

A perfumy note adds some grace to the juicy, minty blackberry and blueberry flavors, with a pleasantly chewy tannic backbone and plenty of licorice and Earl Grey tea accents. Lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2030.

Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. Their success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers. It began with Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold, the pioneers who dreamed big, inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. It continued with celebrated winemaking legends including Max Schubert, who pushed the development to extraordinary, bold new heights. It is this pioneering spirit and curiosity that still rings true after nearly two centuries, it is what has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
