Winemaker Notes

This powerhouse cabernet sauvignon is deep garnet in color and bursting with aromas of black currant and espresso, complemented by subtle savory notes. The weighty palate commands attention with pure, concentrated, sinuous layers of red and black fruits, mocha, dried herbs and tar. Hints of vanillin and clean earth complement big, chewy tannins on an enduring finish.

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Dr. George Belden Crane is credited along with Charles Krug, as one of the major founders of the wine industry in Napa Valley. The vineyard was planted in 1858 in an area that became the Chinatown district of Santa Helena during prohibition. Characterized by gravelly loam soil, it was replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals in 1998 when Andy Beckstoffer acquired it. We released our first vintage from the Dr. Crane Vineyard in 2003.

"Gorgeous blackberry and cassis fruit notes intermixed with notions of crushed, scorched rocks, graphite, licorice, and pain grille result in a prodigious aromatic display offered by the 2006 cabernet sauvignon beckstoffer dr. Crane vineyard. Soft, fleshy, and opulent (it recalls the 2004 version), this stunner will be drinkable upon release, and should last for two decades." 93-95 Points

"Opaque ruby. Powerful dark berry preserve aromas, with cured tobacco and roasted coffee qualities gaining strength with air. Deeply concentrated cassis and bitter cherry flavors are youthfully brooding and firmed by solid tannins. A bit inscrutable today but there is clearly superb material here." 91-93 Points

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
