Winemaker Notes

Hyde is one of the warmer sites we work with, and had no problem reaching fullmaturity in 2011. This said, our yields were down to approximately 1.5 tons per acre, with supersmallberries and low seed counts. The resulting wine has enticing spice aromas, with layers ofmulled cider, cinnamon, clove, strawberry, rose and lavender. On the palate, this wine is supple, softand coating, with fine-grained tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. While it possesses a rich, sappyroundness, the overall impression is one of elegance and sophistication, with a lingering quality tothe finish that underscores its delicate side.

The tannins and acids are pushy on this young Pinot, making it tough to appreciate now despite rich, savory raspberry, persimmon, rose and clove flavors. Give it three or four years in the cellar to let it mellow.

Larry Hyde started planting his Carneros vineyard in 1981, sourcing pinot noir cuttings from Calera. Patz & Hall makes use of two blocks of Hyde's Calera selection, one newer (planted in 2003) and one older (planted in 1996). this is the epitome of Carneros pinot noir: all dark cherry and cola notes, and a sweet exuberance that feels deep rather than cloying.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
