Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Clear golden with green reflections. Complex and intense. Prevailing aromas of acacia blossoms with a Muscat-like notse of passionfruit.

Wonderful as an aperitif or with fish.

Critical Acclaim

"From 50+-year-old vines, the fresh, lively, medium-bodied 2012 Sancerre Vieilles Vignes was aged completely in tank. The tiny yields and old vines are resulted in a certain intensity and richness that one rarely sees in Sancerre. Notes of melons, figs and a salty sea breeze-sort of character emerge from this fresh, lively white. It should drink beautifully for another 2-4 years."
90 Points

"Despite its modest acidity, this is a rich, overwhelmingly herbaceous wine. It has red currant and intense citrus flavors and considerable concentration. This white wine needs at least six months before drinking."

Learn About Patient Cottat

Situated in the small village of Verdigny in the Sancerre region, the Fournier family has been making wine for many generations. The estate has grown from 5 hectares in 1950 to almost 30 hectares today, divided over the appellations of Mentou Salon, Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre. The improvement made in vinification techniques and the permanent concern about quality result in well-balanced wines of great diversity.
