Winemaker's Notes:

Shea is consistently our most forward Pinot, offering early accessibility for a single vineyard wine, yet with significant aging capability. Its palate is sweet red berries, lavender and earth, and is probably our most Burgundian wine. Our production of 1050 cases of Shea was aged 16 months in 40% new French oak, and bottled February 29, 2000.

About Panther Creek:

Panther Creek Cellars has been producing top quality wines (primarily Pinot Noir) since 1986. Panther Creek’s winemaker is Michael Stevenson; our consulting winemaker is Mark Vlossak.

Normal production is 7,000-7,500 cases, although the spectacular 1998 vintage came in closer to 5,000 cases. We returned to normal production with the 1999 harvest, which came in at 7,200 cases, and continued with an estimated 7,300 cases of the 2000 vintage. Philosophically, we at Panther Creek are minimal interventionists. We work hard in the vineyards to obtain the best fruit, then expend out best efforts to coax from the fruit all it can give, without resorting to filtering, fining or additives.

Panther Creek currently obtains its grapes from ten vineyards (Freedom Hill, Shea, Bednarik, Nysa, Arcus, Red Hills, DePonte (formally known as Stewart), Celilo, Youngberg Hill and Melrose), with long-term contracts for specific acres of vines. In other words, we do not buy our grapes by the ton; rather we essentially lease specific blocks and rows in out vineyards. This gives us control over crop thinning, pruning, leaf pulling, and harvesting.
