Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Balanced and focused, the wine exhibits aromas of fresh citrus blossom, honeydew melon and slate. The play of freshness and viscosity lifts honeysuckle and crème brulee flavors through the finish. A beam of natural minerality gives structural support to the opulent texture.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2011 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) emerges from the glass with honey, butter lemon oil, nectarines, mint and passion fruit, all supported by generous yet well-balanced French oak. A voluptuous wine for the year, the 2011 Chardonnay boasts impeccable balance and plenty of creaminess. It will appeal most to readers who appreciate bold, rich Chardonnays. Interestingly, the 2011 Chardonnay also clocks in at 14.9%, but the balance is far better in the Chardonnay than the Pinot."
92 Points

"Bright yellow-green color. Sexy, leesy nose combines lime, brown butter, honeycomb, mocha and vanillin oak. Supple and very ripe, offering a pliant, sweet middle but showing modest complexity today (the pH here is a very high 3.72). This began a bit warm but tightened up nicely in the glass, suggesting that it will gain with a couple years of bottle aging. New director of winemaking Kale Anderson, who was previously at Cliff Lede, blended and bottled the 2011 Pahlmeyer wines but did not vinify them.

Learn About Pahlmeyer Map ItMap It

Jayson Pahlmeyer has been producing highly sought-after wines since 1986. It began with Jayson's dream to make world-class Bordeaux-style wine from Napa Valley. Pahlmeyer's estate vineyard - Waters Rance - is situated at 2100 feet in the Atlas Peak appellation of Napa Valley. It is the key source for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Chardonnay. Jayson's passion eventually led him to the Sonoma Coast, where less than seven miles and two ridges from the Pacific Ocean, he planted Wayfarer Farm, their key source for Pinot Noir.

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...
