Winemaker's Notes

Ex Umbris is Latin for, out of the shadows. The Syrah for this wine comes from several sites. Fruit from Bruce Morford's Slide Mountain Vineyard and Mike Sauer's Red Willow Vineyard, both located in western Yakima Valley, is balanced by the cooler, smoky Lewis Vineyard in The Dalles, and the unctuous fruitiness of Elerding Vineyard located in Alderdale, WA. The cooler temperatures of the 2007 Fall helped to preserve great acidity of the fruit from the Columbia and Yakima Valley. The current vintage exhibits all the fragrance, texture, and deep plum characteristics of great Syrah.

Drink Now- 2011

Critical Acclaim

"Smooth and velvety, offering a plush mouthful of spicy cherry and red berry flavors, playing against plush tannins and hints of milk chocolate on the long, vivid finish. Syrah. Drink now through 2014."
92 Points

"This wine's keenly focused blackberry aromas are filled out with quiet but evident spice notes, and its convincing fruit flows from first sniff to aftertaste with nary a letup in sight. Supple, slightly fleshy and full-bodied yet never heavy, it is fairly polished in feel with integral tannins that provide grip without getting in the way of the wine's early drinkability. It can age but does not need it. GOOD VALUE. "
