Oliverhill Red Silk Shiraz 2010
Syrah/Shiraz from McLaren Vale , Australia
Perhaps it's the old age and low yields of our vines, or maybe the special care and attention our fruit receives in the winery. The essence of McLaren Vale lives in our wine-complex fruit and sexy, silky tannins. This is who we are and we're not about to change! Enjoy!
The Wine Advocate - "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 Red Silk Shiraz offers aromas of crushed blackberries and wild blueberries over tar, licorice, bacon fat and loam. The palate is richly fruited with pure black berry flavors supported by a medium to firm level of grainy tannins and lively acid, finishing long. Drink it now to 2016. "
International Wine Cellar - "Bright purple. Lively Black raspberry and floral aromas show very good upfront appeal. Juicy raspberry and cherry compote flavors pick up a bitter chocolate quality with air, along with a note of candied violet. Finishes gently sweet and long, with a lingering raspberry note. This wine isn't shy about its fruit."
Oliverhill is a small boutique winery (McLaren Vale has been refined to as the spiritual home of the small winery in Australia) that specializes in premium quality limited production reds. Specifically, a single vineyard Shiraz, “Jimmy Section”, coming from a small 5-acre plot planted nearly 30 years ago an old vine Grenache, “Bradey Block”, made from vines up to 80 years old and a Cabernet Sauvignon produced from the “Jimmy Section” vineyard. The Grenache and the Shiraz represent the classic South Australian style, big and juicy with sweet black fruits, brood shouldered with substantial palate presence, yet maintaining balance and exceptional fruit intensity. The Cabernet Sauvignon although not as big and mouth filling texturally maintains noted fruit intensity with a long and persistent finish. All 3 reds are produced in an extremely limited format with total production hovering around 1000 cases total. The Millers, producing handcrafted wines that are truly artisan in style, will never produce a lot of wine but what they do produce will always be of the highest quality. View all Oliverhill Wines
About McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale is home to the oldest Australian vineyard, with grapes planted in 1838. It's a coastal area with the Indian Ocean bordering the west, which contributes a cooling factor that prevents the grapes from getting too hot. In all, the climate is a perfect one for the vines.
Notable FactsIn McLaren Vale, there are vines as far as the eye can see. As in other parts of Australia, Shiraz and Grenache are the most-planted grapes of the region. While red rules, whites are able to hold their own here too. With the warm yet reasonable Mediterranean climate, white grapes like Chardonnay, Semillon and even some Sauvignon Blanc grow well. The wines are round and smooth and the producers in the region are excellent.
About AustraliaLike the United States, which is about the same size, Australia's winemaking regions are huddled into one or two pockets of the country. The state of South Australia, which produces about 60% of the country's wine, also has the most wineries and sub-regions, including McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Barossa Valley. New South Wales is home to the Hunter Valley, while the smaller, southern state of Victoria is best known for theYarra Valley. Head way west to the very large state of Western Australia and you'll find the tiny region of Margaret River at the southern tip.
