    Winemaker Notes

The intensely dark, ruby red color of our 2003 Night Owl Shiraz matches the bold fruit character of plum, red currant and blackberry on the palate. Exotic notes of vanilla, cedar and pepper from oak aging complement the vibrant fruit. Silky tannins support the concentrated flavors and provide a long, memorable finish. Try this wine with jambalaya, beef tenderloin, smoked turkey, burritos and vegetable gratins.

    Night Owl, California
Night Owl wines are a tribute to the many owls that inhabit our unique San Bernabe Vineyard in Monterey. These bold wines express the characteristics of our San Bernabe Vineyard, the most diverse single vineyard in the world. Nesting boxes for our owls is just one of the many ways that we practice sustainable farming to ensure that we protect our rare vineyard site and its flora and fauna for generations to come. While we take the stewardship of the land and our co-habitants seriously, Night Owl wines are fun—-a hoot, one might say—-with a playful bottle label and fruit-forward flavors inside.

Our San Bernabe Vineyard in Monterey County, part of the new San Bernabe AVA, is the most diverse single vineyard in the world, with more than 20 grape varieties planted in 21 different microclimates. San Bernabe Vineyard is a founding member of the Central Coast Natural Vineyard Team, promoting environmentally safe and viticulturally effective sustainable farming practices.

Most of the grapes for this wine come from Block 38, a site with rich, dark loamy soils. Vineyard management – such as early shoot removal – ensures good sun exposure and concentrates the vines’ energy on the remaining primary shoots.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
