#21 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009
What a glorious vintage it was for Chardonnay in 2007! The spring was rainy and free of frost. The summer days were cool and dry, with evening temperatures sometimes bordering on the chilly. (I look back on it as the most comfortable summer I can recall in 35 years as a Napa Valley resident.) Those cool summer days are just perfect for the type of Chardonnay we make -- powerful, complex wines with high natural acid levels. Grapes from the Carneros district vineyards that went into this wine were harvested with higher than normal natural acidity, and the subsequent malo-lactic fermentation was especially vigorous. The result is a Chardonnay with a creamy texture and an attractive element of toast, or grilled bread, in the aroma. Most importantly, winemaker Tadeo Borchardt's efforts have given us a wine of great balance. The separate components are harmoniously joined together with no single characteristic dominating the final blend. The wine is flavorful without being awkward and satisfying without being extreme. We'd be thrilled to make a
Complex aromas of smoke, fig and citrus fold over to the palate. Full-bodied, with fine structure and acidity, along with flavors that end up giving this a delicate feel. The aftertaste is delicious. Drink now through 2012."
"There are 5,000 cases of the gorgeous 2007 Chardonnay Carneros, also an attractive buy. Aged on its lees in 30% new oak, it offers aromas of ripe tropical fruit, lemon zest, and hints of orange, white peach, and brioche. Fresh natural acidity as well as a beautiful texture result in a delicious Chardonnay to drink over the next few years. "

"Pale straw-yellow. Intriguing aromas of orange, honey, hazelnut and toasty oak. Supple but lively, with good lift to the flavors of soft citrus fruits and spices. There's still a touch of reduction here, but brisk acidity and enticing floral perfume gives this a much fresher fruit character than the basic Napa Valley bottling. Finishes with good length and a smoky, leesy element. I like the combination of density and life."

Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
